Butler served as a Magnolia alderman, Vice President of Operation Manhood Incorporated, a member of the Magnolia South Pike Chamber of Commerce, NAACP, and International Union of Electrical Workers. Butler served in the state Senate from 2004 to 2016. Kelvin Butler (Democrat) was a member of the Mississippi State Senate, representing District 38. Butler assumed office in 2004. Butler left office in 2016. Butler ran for election to the Mississippi State Senate to represent District 38. Butler lost in the Democratic primary on August 6, 2019.
