🦅🦅South Pike Alumni of the Week🦅🦅
Janice Felder began playing varsity level basketball while only in the 7th grade, and was a starter. Where she would go on to become a 3-time state champion. Earning Runner-up in The Best of the US Tournament in Tennessee. Beating Lisa Leslie’s team that was ranked #1 in the nation, while South Pike was ranked #3 in the nation.
Felder would then after take her talents to the University of Southern Mississippi. Felder there extended her athletic resume by becoming Freshman of the year in the 90-91 season, 3-time conference player of the year, 4-time All-Conference 1st-team selection, All-time leading scorer & rebounding at USM (amongst men and women records), Kodak All-American in 1994; given to top 10 players in the country)
After finishing her collegiate career, Felder would then go the professional route playing overseas for numerous years in Switzerland, Israel. Felder would return to the states the play in the ABL (1st women’s professional league in the US). In February 2020 USM honored her their own Black History Month recipient.
After retiring from basketball as an athlete, Felder would soon join the coaches chair as head coach of her high school alma mater. During her tenure as South Pike girls’ basketball coach, Felder amassed great records and achievements in such a short time: winning Coach of the Year (4x) and winning 100+ games within a 5-year span, Leading the Lady Eagles to multiple district champions championship.
Felder still serving in athletics but as a teacher at Eva Gordon Upper Elementary. He passion for the game still lives on as she encourages young athletes to give it their all in all areas of life.
